Los Van Van Performing in the Land of Salsa and Plena
06/18/2003 07:28PM
Contributed by: ARomero

Events(Prensa Latina - Cumbancha) Havana, Cuba - Popular Cuban dance music orchestra Los Van Van, led by Juan Formell, is currently performing on stages of the neighboring island of Puerto Rico. On Friday, the "Cuban music explosion," widely famous inside and outside Cuba, will perform at the Exhibition Center of the Caribe Hilton Hotel, in San Juan. Later, the renewed orchestra led by Formell since its foundation in 1969, is scheduled to perform at the Variety Playhouse June 24. The land of the coquí, one of the smallest species of frogs in the world, and of contagious rhythms such as the plena and salsa, will witness Cuban music, which combines the sound of a "charanga" orchestra with modern rhythms, which became the "songo."

The creativity of Formell and the group's other talented musicians during three decades is the formula that brought the group world success and a Grammy Award in 2000 in the category of Latin Music for their album "Llegó Van Van!" (Van Van has Come,). Moreover, it is an encounter with the Puerto Rican audience and musicians who follow and enjoy the work of the popular Cuban orchestra and also other Cuban groups that in the last decade permitted the establishment of a solid cultural bridge between artists from both nations.
