Pinar del Rio to create Music Information Center
01/28/2004 01:00AM
Contributed by: ARomero

General News(Prensa Latina - Cumbancha) Pinar del Rio, Cuba - The preservation of Pinar del Rio’s music heritage will be favored with the creation of the Argeliers León Center, first of its type in Cuba. Thus, the work started five years ago by specialists of Pinar del Rio’s Miguelito Cuni Music Center will continue. In a small room they had stored valuable music objects, most of them donated by the artists themselves and their families. In a short time they have been able to recover more than five thousand scores –some original-, nearly two thousand long play and 78 rpm albums and about 500 photos, many of them considered historical documents due to their age.

The collections of important figures of the province including Pedro Junco’s collection, author of the world famous bolero "Nosotros," with 700 documents, and the collection of Aldo Carrazana, accompanist pianist of popular Latin American singers Mirta Silva and Lucho Gatica. The center owns valuable pieces, ranging from music instruments of the 19th century to the hats of Polo Montáñez and the "palo de agua" African singer Cesarea Evora gave him.
