Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA - Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, owner and producer of reggae’s most legendary record label, Studio One passed away in Jamaica on Tuesday, May 4. Born January 26, 1932, Mr. Dodd was known as the “Founding Father of Reggae Music.” He gave artists Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Burning Spear, Freddie McGregor, Delroy Wilson, and Marcia Griffiths, along with hundreds of others, their first opportunities in the music business.

Growing up in Jamaica during the 1960s, Heartbeat A&R Director Chris Wilson was a follower of Studio One and went on to collaborate on 60 albums with Dodd, including important 2-disc anthologies such as Bob Marley & the Wailers’ One Love at Studio One, the Skatalites’ Foundation Ska, and the tribute album, Respect to Studio One. Chris remembers Dodd as “the most musical and upstanding figure in the reggae music industry. He will be sorely missed and our condolences go out to Mrs. Dodd, Carol, and the rest of the Dodd family.”
