Kiran Ahluwalia at the Detroit Festival of the Arts
06/10/2004 01:32AM
Contributed by: ARomero

EventsCanada - Kiran Ahluwalia, who's latest release Beyond Boundaries won the prestigious Canadian 2004 Juno Award for Best World Music Recording, will be appearing June 12th at the Detroit Festival of the Arts - 5:30 pm on the Wayne State/WDET Stage.

Fluent in four languages and effortlessly at home in both mainstream Canadian culture and the Punjabi-Canadian world she was raised in, Kiran Ahluwalia is a performer of two distinct styles of vocal music from the Indian subcontinent.

With her backing trio, she sings ghazals and Punjabi folk songs and has become one of Canada's most successful performers of world music. As a composer, she is forging a new repertoire, putting the words of Indo and Pakistani Canadian poets to her own compositions; songs that are firmly rooted in the tradition while taking a modern turn.

Kiran Ahluwalia will also be doing a handful of US dates this fall including:

Sept 17th - Lotus World Music Festival, Bloomington
Sept 18th & 19th - Chicago World Music Festival
Sept 21st - Joe's Pub, New York City
