  London, England - British label Manteca has
released Nu Brazil 2 - fresh sounds from the country of tomorrow
(MANTDCD227). British DJ, John Armstrong, produced the mid-price double CD and
it contains a lot of new material as well as cuts that the producer couldn't fit
in the first volume. "The first Nu Brazil (MANTDCD217) was sufficiently well
received by the public and retailers alike for Manteca, the record label, to
commission a second," says Armstrong. "What I'd forgotten, of course, is that
the Brazilian music scene moves along at such a clip that suddenly there were
another hundred or so worthy new releases to consider, dissect, agonize over and
shortlist. So, apart from a couple of elusive cuts that evaded the original net,
you have here a completely fresh selection."
The album includes what the producer calls "'fantasy
bossa nova' - those ur-Brazilian songs that evoke sun and sand, ice-cold beers
and red-hot bundas, whatever their lyrical subject-matter: try Babulina, for
instance, or the cuts by Fernanda Porto and Eli Goulart."
There is also fado-tropical, samba-pagode, samba-funk,
samba-soul, samba-rock, samba-suingue, samba de coco from Pernambuco,
bass'n'bossa from Sao Paulo, choro nova from Rio de Janeiro and milonga novo
from the Brazil-Argentina border.
"Brazil has its own takes on club-dance styles such
as lounge, broken beat, hip hop and soulful house. They're all here too, as are
some of the more rock-influenced and roots bands that have emerged in the last
ten years from the Indie scene: Nacao Zumbi and Inacio Zatz are prime choices,
with Inacio's stupendous slice of samba-rock magic pointing to the fact that
much of the current heat in new Brazilian music originates from rock-rap-ragga
crossovers and fusions."
