Gamelan from Central Java (ARC Music EUCD1902, 2004)

The music on this album comes from the Indonesian island of Java. Gamelan music is played primarily in the islands of Java and Bali. Most researchers recognize three different styles: Balinese, West Javan (Sunda) and Central Javan. The album's detailed notes describe the characteristics of Central Javan gamelan music.

The album includes recordings by musicians from Java performing on various Javanese and European gamelans: "Srepegan" [slendro nem] (2004); "Gendhing kemanak Anglirmendung" [pelog barang] (1998); "Ladrang Gadhung Mlati " [slendro sanga] (1999); "Bedaya Dances at Kraton Surakarta" (1995); "Gendhing Munggang" (2000); "Gendhing Mandulpati" [slendro nem] (2004); "Gendhing Carabalen" [Ladrang Bali Balen and gangsaran] (2004); "Sekaten Gendhing" (2001); "Goa Tabuhan - Stone gamelan" (2001); "Sampak" [slendro nem] (2004); "Gendhing Kodok Ngorek" (1999); and "Lebaran" (1989).
