CD ReviewsAltan

Local Ground (Narada70876-19196-2 2, 2005)

Altan is one of the most veteran acts in the Irish folk music scene. Their style has created many followers inside and outside of Ireland. The virtuoso instrumentalists transform traditional folk tunes into modern-day folk pieces, creating a contemporary jam-style Celtic groove to the beat of the wonderful Irish frame drum known as bodhrán.

Local Ground is the group's latest recording. Altan celebrates the music of Ireland with a collection of dazzling instrumental jigs and reels; as well as evocative ballads featuring Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh's gentle voice.

Several high profile guests have participated in the recording: Galician piper Carlos Núñez, guitarist Donal Lunny, percussionist Jim Higgins, and pianist Triona Ní Dhomnaill, and bassist Stephen Cooney.
