World Music Portraits: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (Shanachie, 2004)

This is an depth documentary about the life of the late Qawwali legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The film was shot by Jerome De Missolz, who traveled to various locations to interview Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and individuals who knew him.

Part of the documentary takes place in Queens (New York). Later, the crew travels to Lahore (Pakistan), where the Pakistani star appears in a live performance, at home companying himself with a harmonium, and jamming. Later in the video, Peter Gabriel gives an interview, explaining his relationship with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (he recorded several albums for Gabriel's label). There is also an opportunity to see Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan working with guitarist and producer Michael Brook (who produced the popular Mustt Mustt album).

The video also reveals the importance of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, as an innovator. He added folk music and improvisation, and he simplified the classical forms.
