Now available in the US, Milton Nascimento’s latest CD, Pietá, should delight his numerous fans. The album is dedicated to Lília, his adoptive mother.

Nascimento’s brilliant music is hard to classify. He has successfully experimented with numerous genres. Pietá includes radio friendly MPB (Brazilian pop) songs that drift into spectacular Afro-Brazilian drumming, exquisite orchestral arrangements and inspired jazz grooves. There are also compelling duets with Brazilian singers such as Marina Machado and Maria Rita Mariano.

The list of guests is long. Familiar names that stand out are Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, and orchestral arranger Eumir Deodato.

About Lília, Nascimento says: “She made me hear on the radio Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Yma Sumac, Doris Day, Julie London, and specially my dear Angela Maria., also known as Sapoti. With this album I send a kiss to all those singers, who taught me to sing and especially to Lília, my mother, to whom I owe everything I am and to whom I dedicate this work. It couldn’t be different.”
