The Rev John Teye Memorial School band – comprising teenage musicians – has thrilled the audience at a concert as part of the first Ghana Jazz festival. The band presented their own jazz rendition of popular gospel tunes as well as their own compositions to the delight of the audience.

The John Teye Memorial School is the only school that is being represented at the Ghana Jazz Festival. This shows the pedigree of the school band, which has been in existence for about 20 years.

At the first concert of the festival, six young boys who represented the band did not disappoint. They played jazz renditions of popular gospel tunes as well as tunes they had composed themselves.

The co-ordinator of Music Education at the University of Maryland in the United States, Dr. John Lamkin, was impressed with the performance of the kids.

Other Jazz artists from around the globe also performed at the concert.

They included Absalom Ben Shlomo and his ethnic experience from Jerusalem, Toni and the Jazz Stone All Stars from Ghana and an all-star performance by renowned American Jazz artists.
