General NewsNew York, USA - On January 30th, 2006, the booking agent for renowned Latin percussionist Ray Barretto reported a severe deterioration of the artist's health.

Maurice Montoya, of Maurice Montoya Music Agency said: "Legendary conguero and gentleman Ray Barretto was rushed in for an emergency operation this morning (Monday) after suffering a relapse after quintuple bypass operation and pneumonia, Sunday evening. His wife Brandy has asked for everyone to pray for him today and send a chain letter to all of his friends and fans."

At 76, Ray Barretto embodies the history of Latin Jazz. He was one of the first Latino artists to record and perform with mainstream jazz artists including Sonny Stitt, Lou Donaldson, Red Garland, Cannonball Adderley, Freddie Hubbard, Cal Tjader, and Dizzie Gillespie. In addition, he is a celebrated figure in the Afro-Cuban and Salsa music scene.
