Carlinhos Brown
Carlinhos Brown is a fascinating musician and composer. He grew up in an impoverished part of Bahia, the Candeal bairro. On this DVD, Carlinhos retraces his roots and introduces the viewers to the vibrant life in his former neighborhood. He joins women singing Afro-Brazilian chants and later details show he learned drums. His mentor was Pintado do Bongo, a pioneer in using drum sticks when playing bongos.
Recycling is an essential part for musicians who can't afford expensive musical instruments. From tin cans, young and old have created fabulous percussion instruments. Carlinhos shows several groups, like the talented children who play tin cans and the men of the spectacular drumming group Timbalada, who have become stars in Brazil.
The mesmerizing documentary also includes one clip from a concert by Carlinhos in Bahia. The rhythm orgy, combining numerous drums and electric instruments, is clearly spectacular and it shows how far the native of Bahia has taken his love for drumming.
