The Dancing Turtle label in
London will be holding a large world music event, Merdeka, in London, April
7th, 9 pm to 4 am. Merdeka will be held at

London SW9 6LH. Tel: 020 7274 5537. For directions go to:

There will be a live audio streaming of the event on the
internet at www.piratetv.net from 2130 GMT on the night. The night is a fundraising and awareness raising event for the 'Free
West Papua' human rights campaign. This is a global group campaigning on
behalf of the native West Papuan people who are alleged to be suffering terribly
at the hands of their Indonesian occupiers. According to the organizers, over
100,000 native people have been killed by Indonesian army and militia and very
little news is reaching the outside world as there is an Indonesian imposed ban
on foreign journalists entering the region. "In recent months, violence and
killings have escalated at an alarming rate."
Proceeds from the evening
will go towards refugee support funds for Papuan refugees in the UK, and helping
develop the charity further. "Putting on a event like this is crucial. To
raise awareness for these peoples plight and allow music and live performance to
do what they do best - bring people of all races and backgrounds together."
Confirmed live performances for the evening include the highly acclaimed
producer collective Jazzanova, Future World Funk (Montreux Jazz Festival, Womad,
Glastonbury), Sambura (Brazilian samba funk act), Sabari (African drumming
collective), and Kid Harpoon (UK folk sensation). There will also be a special
performance from native West Papuans - The Lani Singers. This will be the first
time that a live performance of West Papuan music has taken place in London.
There will also be DJs from Colombia, Brazil, Zaire and India playing global
beats/Latin/afro funk/roots.
