Indian Music Concerts at the Old Town School of Folk Music

Chicago (Illinois), USA – The Old Town School of Folk Music will be presenting a series of Indian music concerts at its venue and other locations.

Kiran Ahluwalia is a performer of two distinct styles of vocal music from the Indian subcontinent - ghazals and Punjabi folk songs. Kiran is truly taking her music beyond boundaries and becoming a global musician for the 21st century.

Ronu Majumdar with Abhijit Banerjee & Durga Prasad Majumdar will be playing at
Old Town School of Folk Music on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at 8:00 PM.

The Indian flute (Bansuri) is considered to be one of the most ancient and natural musical instruments, and India’s virtuoso, Pandit Ronu Majumdar, has become synonymous with the Bansuri. A powerhouse performer, Ronu Majumdar is solidly rooted in the Maihar tradition, which has produced musicians of the eminence of Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Ronu will be performing with renowned percussionists Abhijit Banerjee (tabla) and Durga Prasad Majumdar (pakhawaj).

The Old Town School of Folk Music is a co-sponsor with the Kalapriya Foundation and The International House Global Voices Series of the Rupayan Ensemble. The concert will be held Friday, May 5, 2006 at 7:00pm. Eight folk musicians from the India desert state of Rajasthan, featuring Ghazi Khan, singer with a cult following based on his starring appearance in the Roma film directed by Tony Gatlif, Latcho Drom (1993).
