Joyas Prestadas (Sony BMG Norte, 2006)
The princess of new flamenco, Niña Pastori, has a new recording out and, thankfully, it is also available in North America through Sony BMG Norte. Joyas Prestadas means "borrowed jewels," a title that makes a reference to the songs on the album, which are Spanish-language pop classics. Pastori has reinterpreted these timeless songs and has added her distinctive Flamenco style.
The album is certainly not a Flamenco album, but rather a stylized pop album with flamenco and world music influences. Joyas Prestadas includes pop, jazz and Flamenco musical arrangements by two well known Madrid producers, Julio Jiménez "Chaboli" and Nacho Mano.
The track selection includes Juan Luis Guerra's love song Burbujas De Amor (Bubbles Of Love), Mana's Vivir Sin Aire (To Live Without Air) and Alejandro Sanz's Cuando Nadie Me Ve (When No One Sees Me). The best song on the album, however, is the melancholic Pájaros de Barro (Birds of Clay).
