Phoenix (Arizona), USA -
Dancers of Mother Earth features the Todi Neesh Zhee Singers (Navajo) performing
12 two-step and skip dance songs that are derived from the traditions of the
"Squaw Dance," the centerpoint of an important Navajo ceremony that has
undergone a few mutations resulting in its current form of a healing ceremony.
Held on three successive nights, the squaw dance marks the only traditional dance of the Navajo in which men and women dance together socially with song lyrics dealing with love and relationships between the sexes. In recent times, it has become acceptable to perform squaw dance songs at purely social gatherings apart from the healing ceremony.
