[image1_left]Ghanaian Urban Life singer/songwriter Chemphe is currently in the studio recording a song about violence against women. The single ‘Why You Dey Treat Am Bad’ and its video are scheduled for release in Ghana and worldwide on November 25, International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.
A portion of the profits realized from the sale of the CD and video will be donated to organizations dealing with violence against women in Ghana. Chemphe’s debut album No Pampanaa on the Flava Records label is due in October 2006. The singer/songwriter whose Urban Life music is a fusion of R&B vocals and African grooves wrote the track ‘Why You Dey Treat Am Bad’ to caution perpetrators of violence against women.
About International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women: November 25 has been marked as the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women by women activists worldwide. This day is marked with the brutal assassination, in 1961, of the three Mirabal sisters who were political activists in the Dominican Republic. The Mirabal sisters are a symbol of resistance against the dictatorship in the Dominican Republic then. Since 1981 women's activists have celebrated this day as the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women to gain momentum and solidarity in their struggle against violence against women.
