Maggie MacInnes Presents Her New CD Òran na Mnà – A Woman’s Song at Celtic Connections
01/19/2007 08:55PM
Contributed by: WMC_News_Dept.

New ReleasesGlashow, Scotland - Maggie MacInnes launches her latest album, Òran na Mnà - a Woman's Song, exclusively at Celtic Connections on Saturday, January 20 at 6:00pm. In 2004, the Celtic Connections Festival of Glasgow commissioned singer and clàrsach player Maggie MacInnes to write a 45 minute piece of music which was performed to great acclaim at the festival in 2004 and 2005. Now Maggie has, with some assistance from the Scottish Arts Council, further developed the piece which combines music and song in Gaelic and English and has recorded it using some of Scotland’s finest musicians and singers.

As a singer and clàrsach player deeply rooted in the Gaelic musical tradition, Maggie MacInnes hopes to pay tribute to her forebears through this new music. In recent times, female Gaelic poets have been starting to find their voices and be heard once again. Their words, and the words and melodies of the female bards and tradition bearers of the last few centuries, are the main inspiration for Òran na Mnà (A Woman’s Song) which links the voices and feelings of women from centuries past to the present day.

Performing along with Maggie on this new CD are: Kathleen MacInnes and Mairi Morrison (Gaelic Song), Brian McAlpine (Piano, Keyboards and Accordion), Fraser Fifield (Soprano Sax & Whistles), Finlay MacDonald (Highland and Border Pipes and Whistles), Frank McGuire (Percussion), Aaron Jones (Bouzouki and Electric Bass) and Flora MacNeil (Spoken Poetry).
