CD Reviews

Various Artists

Calamaro Querido! 1 (Norte/Sony-BMG, 2006)

Calamaro Querido! 2 (Norte/Sony-BMG, 2006)

Some of the finest representatives of the Rock en Español community, as well artists representing other genres,  contributed songs to these two tribute CDs. The songwriter honored is Andrés Calamaro, an Argentine musician who has had a tremendous influence in Rock en Español and Beyond. This tribute takes place while the artist is still young and alive.

Calamaro Querido! 1 begins with one of the legendary stars of rock en Español, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, with a ska version of La Parte de Adelante. Most of the album is comprised of Argentine and Spanish rock musicians playing alt-punk and ska. Things get more creative with Spanish band Muchachito Bombo Infierno, with its mestizo sounds.

The highlights of Calamaro Querido! 2 are Mexican singer Julieta Venegas, playing alt-cumbia; more ska rock with Los Pericos; Flamenco darling Niña Pastori; the samba rock of Vicentico;and the always outstanding Argentine singer and bass master Pedro Aznar.

Buy Calamaro Querido! 1 and Calamaro Querido! 2.
