Graeme Revell

Darfur Now (Lakeshore Records, 2007)

For the soundtrack to the film Darfur Now, composer Graeme Revell has recorded a collection of dazzling cinematic pieces that include a few world music elements in the form of drums, flutes and melodies. The evocative soundscapes illustrate the different phases and emotions of the movie, which is a call to action for people to help end the crisis in Darfur (Sudan).

Graeme Revell’s first film score was for the Australian thriller Dead Calm, which starred Nicole Kidman. Since then he has become a highly sought-after film composer, known for incorporating traditional ethnic music and natural sound. He has collaborated with a wide range of film makers including George Miller, John Woo, Michael Mann, Ted Demme, Philip Noyce, and Robert Rodriguez.

Revell’s credits include The Crow, Chinese Box (Winner-Best Score at the Venice Film Festival), The Negotiator, Daredevil, and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

Darfur Now shows the struggles and achievements of six very different individuals who bring to light the genocidal situation in Darfur and the need to get involved. From a UCLA graduate in Los Angeles, California, to a Darfurian woman who joins rebel forces, to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, to a United Nations humanitarian on the ground in Sudan, to an internationally known actor and activist, and finally to a community leader in a West Darfur refugee camp, the film portrays the heroic efforts of six people responding to a humanitarian tragedy unfolding before our eyes. Written and directed by Ted Braun, the film explores the Darfur conflict through the first-hand experiences of Don Cheadle, Hejewa Adam, Pablo Recalde, Ahmed Mohammed Abakar, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, and Adam Sterling.
