National Geographic Channel Heats Up Late Night with Music Programming All during July

General News

Washington, D.C. (USA) - For the month of July, National Geographic Channel (NGC) will take viewers on a musical journey around the world, celebrating diversity and connecting viewers with other cultures. Beginning June 30, from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. ET/midnight to 3 a.m. PT, NGC will broadcast late night programming culled from its international sister network Nat Geo Music and continue to showcase select titles via VOD. This repurposed content is the latest addition following the appointment last year of David Haslingden as CEO of both NGC and National Geographic Channel International (NGCI).

NGC’s broadcast of Nat Geo Music will encompass music videos, concerts, interviews and documentaries, with a focus on stories that make music a vehicle for a better understanding and appreciation of today’s global community. An alternative to the mainstream, Nat Geo Music is intended to be progressive and experimental, highlighting ways in which local sounds are evolving to influence artists from different backgrounds and places.
Nat Geo Music was launched as a 24-hour music channel in October 2007 to 4.2 million subscribers in Italy as one of NGCI’s programming services and has since expanded in Portugal and throughout Latin and South America.

Along with major label partnerships, Nat Geo Music has also secured deals with prominent independent labels and acclaimed artists. The schedule will integrate music videos with short clips that examine and celebrate the cultures behind the music.
Scheduling blocks include:

  • Place Jam – focusing on music from a specific country
  • We Love… – dedicated to artists and genres we love (e.g., We Love Reggae, We Love Caetano Veloso)
  • Music Nomad – programming connecting the spirit of traveling to music
  • Geo Sessions – intimate acoustic performances and interviews with top musicians, including Ben Harper, K'naan, Michael Franti and Aterciopelados
  • Fusion – music videos of all genres from around the globe

Nat Geo Music complements and is an outgrowth of National Geographic Music and Radio (NGMR), a division of National Geographic Entertainment, established in 2007 to reach people and inspire them to care about the planet through the power of music. NGMR distributes and promotes its music offerings throughout all of National Geographic’s media platforms, including the National Geographic Channels worldwide, National Geographic Films, National Geographic Giant Screen Films and National Geographic Kids Entertainment, as well as its magazines and digital media divisions. In addition to its programming and music supervision responsibilities, NGMR oversees the production of projects and programs with some of today’s hottest artists who are actively involved in environmental and cultural issues.

Based at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., the National Geographic Channel (NGC) is a joint venture between National Geographic Ventures (NGV) and Fox Cable Networks (FCN).
