On July 2nd, S.O.B.’s, presents The Original Tito Puente Orchestra, with Tito’s son, Ronny Puente as a special guest. Tito Puente, known as “El Rey de Timbales”, was one of the most influential Latin musicians of all time. Born and raised in East Harlem, he was the true representation of the New York salsa sound. In the 1950’s, he owned the stage at the famed Palladium nightclub with performances that brought salsa and mambo to audiences from all walks of life.
 
 Now, The Original Tito Puente Orchestra is a veritable all-star line up of salsa musicians, including names like Johnny Rodriguez, Mitch Frohman and Frankie Vasquez. The band’s musical director and virtuoso percussionist, José Madera, played with Tito Puente for 25 years, but also wrote music for other salsa legends like Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colón, and Celia Cruz, as well as branching outside the genre, working with the likes of James Brown, Diana Ross and David Sanborn. Mitch Frohman leads his own orchestra, The Bronx Horns, and along with Frankie Vasquez, is a part of the renowned Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

S.O.B.’s was home to several Tito Puente shows before he passed away in 2000, and it welcomes back his original band, playing with his youngest son, Ronny Puente. Although the “sultan of salsa” won’t be there on July 2nd, his spirit will be in the building, as well as the spirit of the Palladium-era that made New York salsa the rich historic scene it is today.
