The Mike and Amy Finders (say finnders) Band transcends the boundaries of bluegrass, blues, country and folk music. Playing their own striking original music, tributes to a few contemporary songwriters, and various rippin' takes on bluegrass and blues standards, the group brings new life to old tunes. A truly "unplugged" act, including guitar, mandolin, harmonica, dobro and stand-up bass, with the occasional fiddle and banjo, the group harmonizes around one omni-directional microphone, weaving stunning instrumental prowess with friendly crowd rapport, meaningful lyrics and sweet, memorable voices.

The printed comparisons of Amy Finders' voice to Joni Mitchell, Allison Krauss and Natalie Merchant have all fallen short of describing the mesmerizing experience of her singing. Playing driving mandolin and singing harmony in addition to her lead vocal chores, Amy supports fellow singer, songwriter, guitar player and husband Mike Finders. He sings in a soulful husky tenor and flatpicks an old Martin guitar like Doc Watson.

After many successful years as a touring folk duo based in Galena, IL, the couple moved to Iowa City in 2001 and were joined by the talents of Billy Valencia on a thumpin' stand-up bass; youthful veteran of local world-music, country and funk bands. These three upstarts are frequently joined by fiddle wizard, Al Murphy, a legend on the national bluegrass scene having toured and recorded with such folk giants as Greg Brown, John Hartford and Kenny Baker in his forty year career of professional fiddlin.' For certain shows the band contracts the services of former Bill Monroe Bluegrass Boy, Bob Black on five-string banjo, resulting in a truly nuclear acoustic roots performance.

This group honed its sound in the Winter of 2001-2002 at Iowa City's premier folk venue, the Mill, where Al and Bob have played together in various bluegrass bands for the last couple of decades. Mike and Amy's repetoire and polished presentation was an easy act for their new band mates to drop into. It is not surprising that a new sound and show were formed with the addition of such talent and experience.
