World Music Guide to Granada

Compiled by Kate Edbrooke, flamenco promoter and Granada tour guide. Contact: kate@andalamusica.com.

Granada is best known for one of the most beautiful monumental complexes in Europe, the Moorish Palace, La Alhambra and the adjacent Generalife Gardens. It is advisable to buy tickets in advance online.

The Andalusian city is also the place where Christopher Columbus set out for America, a statue depicting him with the Catholic Monarchs is situated at the end of Gran Via by Plaza Nueva.

However Granada’s most famous personality is the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. You can visit his home, Huerta de San Vicente, now a museum and public park.

Granada is also a cradle of Flamenco. The Cuevas del Sacromonte (Sacromonte caves) in Granada used to be the homes of numerous Gypsy families. Flamenco aficionados from all over the world enjoyed for decades the live performances held there. Despite having become a tourist attraction, the caves are still a good source of Flamenco, particularly the specialty of Granada, La Zambra.
